Making New Friends In Krabi

Our Daily Companion Coffee This is a blog for the animal lovers, those that want to hear about happy life’s for furry friends who have suffered and the incredible people who volunteer their time and skills to ensure animals are cared for in the local community. We spent four nights at Chill Out Village in the small sea gypsy town of Ban Lampho surrounded by nature, wildlife and rescue animals. It was the most soul filling, rewarding time meeting the 3 dogs and 13 cats that called the village home during our stay, the number of residents fluctuates depending on who gets adopted or if someone new joins the family. Located about 20 minutes from Krabi’s Ao Nang Beach it felt like we were miles away from everything in the best way possible. Olly-Ang Driving along small village roads we initially wondered how our time in the back of beyond would be, with questioning looks from our driver we arrived to a welcoming committee of barking dogs alerting staff someone was at the gate. After a warm,...

The Questions We Keep Getting Asked

Meeting the Real Santa in Montreal

A huge part of this adventure is to log it along the way so we always have it to look back on. Everything included. From money, planning, educating Hugo and all the fun we have along the way.
As much as this next step is about fulfilling our dreams we also want to encourage others to take the leap and do whatever it is they have always wanted to do. With only a few days til we head off we have started to notice we are getting asked a lot of the same questions so thought why not answer them for everyone to see!

The most asked questions...

How are we funding this?
We sold our house and basically all our possessions. We have kept maybe a dozen boxes of bits and pieces that are special to us, Harry Potter books and wands included. Our Bubble cat has gone to live with the grandparents where she will be absolutely spoilt.
We bought our home in 2017 and since then the market price steadily increased, this means after paying off the remaining mortgage we walked away with a tidy sum to set us up. Most of the profit has gone into an investment and we have kept enough to get us started on our journey.

Do we have a budget?
Yes, absolutely we do. Our budget is $150 NZD per day, this will cover our accommodation, food, daily transport, activities, all our daily living costs. Some places will be cheaper, some more expensive. The daily average is most definitely not a target.
If we can do locations cheaper it will give us flexibility to spend more in other areas or add on a cool activity, the aim is to keep our daily expenses at no more than $55,000 NZD per year with, we have downloaded Tripit onto our phones and will be tracking EVERYTHING, every bottle of water, each tuk tuk ride so we know where we are at money wise.
We will track things like travel to new locations such as flights, long buses/trains or insurance separately as these are costs we won't always have control over. There will also be some epic extras we decide to do along the way like a trip to Borneo or hot air balloons in Cappadocia, obviously these activities will blow our daily budget but part of this adventure is to see and explore the world. Each opportunity may be a once in a life time chance and we plan on making the most of our time away.
The thing with tracking all our expenses is we can look back at the end of each month and the end of the year and see exactly where our money is going, where we can stretch things out a bit more and ultimately see how long we can sustain full time travel.

How do we get travel insurance?
SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance is designed for travellers. It covers us for medical treatment, lost luggage, travel delays, evacuation and even death 💀
The insurance is on a month to month plan with payments made 4 weekly and can be cancelled at any time, there is also the option to add extras to the coverage if you want for things like adventure sports.
A little perk for us is we have been able to become affiliates! This means we can earn upto 10% if you use our link below, so if you are looking at insurance through SafetyWing please think of us, it might even cover a meal for us in Asia lol

Are we planning on making any income?
Hmm yes and no. While we won't be "working" we will be continuing to make epic YouTube videos, updating the blog, posting on social media etc so we are hoping to make some income through those avenues. Our YouTube channel has been steadily growing and at some point will hopefully have the potential to earn $$. We can earn money through affiliate programmes like SafetyWing insurance, possibly get sponsorship through collabs and can earn credit with Airalo eSims.
This is all something that we will just take it as it comes but keep an eye out for codes popping up to benefit us and you.
We have also joined "Buy me a Coffee" where you can kindly donate us money to any value that we can use along the way

Are we pre planning accomodation, locations etc?
Yes to some extent but again this is another thing we will see how it goes.
We have booked our first few weeks accomodation but are hoping to start winging it as we get further into this journey. As for locations we have a list of countries we would love to visit but will figure out exactly where as we get closer to visiting those areas as this will be weather and cost dependant.
A big thing we always need to do is have a departure booked before arriving as most countries want to see a confirmed exit upon entry.

How are we educating Hugo?
Travelling the world and experiencing new cultures is education in itself. But yes, we will do some formal education along the way, though this will be fairly loose.
We plan on teaching him what he's interested in so will be focusing largely on animals and history, we will visit museums, parks, wildlife areas and chat with locals. Hugo will help navigate the streets, pay vendors at markets, learn to cook but mostly we want him to be accepting and understanding of different cultures and always be kind to be people and animals. Our goal is to give him the grounding to become an amazing well rounded adult.
In amongst our world schooling approach we will continue to grow his base knowledge of maths, English and science. Luckily for us Hugo loves learning and is an avid reader, he's already excited to start his travel journal and may even get his own page here to write about his experiences.

What happens if we get homesick?
We deal with it. Life has ups and downs no matter where we are.
This is a subject the three of us have spoken about together and have come up with a plan for when that time comes. We will acknowledge the feeling, talk about it if we want, video call someone from home or close all the curtains and watch a Disney movie while eating our feelings with chips, fizzy and takeaways.
We know this will happen at some point and probably a few times and thats OK, we have agreed to respect each others space when space is needed and will all try to be as patient and understanding with each other as we can and apologise when needed.

On a Train Somewhere

So believe it or not we have thought this whole thing through, we have tried to plan as much as we can and talk about the how's and what ifs but a lot of the time we are going to need to adapt along the way.
We are going into the unknown and our biggest plan is to just enjoy the time together and make the most of all the experiences we have along the way.
